Living Arrangements

$25 daily for room and meals with a Mexican family. We recommend that you live with a Mexican family so that you will both practice your Spanish and learn the cultural ways of the language. It will ensure maximum learning retention. The cost includes 3 meals a day and sleeping quarters. Arrangements for laundry need to be made separately. For private room and private bath, the cost is $22 daily. Please ask for details.

Families are middle class, warm people who are eager to share their culture and welcome you as part of their family. Middle class homes are smaller and less luxurious when compared with American middle class homes. There are very few dishwashers or clothes dryers. But many families have full-time servants.

If you have a spirit of adventure and an interest in people, living with a family is the ideal way to learn Spanish in the shortest time possible. If you prefer luxury over family life, staying with a Mexican family is not for you. In this case we can help you find accommodations in one of the many nice hotels or bungalows available in town. They range from $40 to $250 per night. There are also some nice, less luxurious hotels for $25 to $35 per night, without meals. Groups of students who wish to stay at a luxurious hotel receive a 30% discount on lodging at the Coral Hotel & Marina.

Special Rates:

Special group or package rates are available, as are arrangements for optional programs.

Foreign currency may be exchanged at the airport, casa de cambios (money exchange offices) or any bank between 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM, Monday thru Friday. Banamex is the only bank open to 3 PM. There are several cajero automáticos (ATMs-automatic tellers) in Ensenada if you have a need for additional cash. You will receive currency in pesos from the banks and ATMs.

US dollars are readily accepted in Ensenada; however, at times you may have to accept your change in pesos. We encourage you to bring your money in traveler's checks.

Please bear in mind that you will need cash to pay your host family. The Institute will accept cash or traveler's checks. In general you will find it very difficult to use personal checks.
