Lap Band System

The adjustable gastric banding system is designed to induce weight loss by limiting food consumption.

It is a silicone elastomer ring designed to be placed around the upper part of the stomach and filled with saline on the inner surface (the inner surface of the band is inflatable). This creates a new small stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below the band so the food storage area in the stomach is reduced and the pouch above the band can hold only a small amount of food.

The adjustable gastric band is placed laparoscopically under general anesthesia, using small incisions.

The band is connected by tubing to an access port that is placed beneath the skin during surgery. This will permit later percutaneous stoma size adjustment, by adding or subtracting saline solution.

Lap Band Removal

If there is a problem with the band, if you can’t lose enough weight or you can’t adjust to the habits, it may be necessary the removal of the band. Generally after the lap-band removal, your stomach will return to normal and the digestive tract should function normally.

Lap-Band Surgery requires two to three days hospital stay. The surgery usually takes 60-90 minutes and the patient can return to normal activities in about a week to ten days.
